The Eastern Himalaya remain at the dawn of the 21st century little explored. The least known mountains of the range are located in northern Myanmar . Few people associate glaciated mountain peaks, deep gorges and unexplored rivers with Myanmar . Indeed, this is one of the reasons Myanmar has so long avoided the boots of modern day explorers. Each autumn, winter and spring Woodland’s offers expeditions into this Kachin tribal land of dense forests and snow capped mountains located in northern Myanmar’s Kachin state. These expeditions journey to one of the few remaining truly intact wilderness areas of Asia. Our goal is the mountains of the Kumon range. The highest peak of the range is Mt. Hkakaborazi (just under 6,000 meters) which joins the Himalaya with the Kumon and Hengduan mountains. These treks, some as short as 3 days, some as long as 4 weeks, also introduce trekkers to the cultural wonders of the mountain region.

The Kachin tribe is dominant in northern Myanmar. Within the Kachin tribe, many sub tribes such as the Rawang, Drung, Lisu, Singpho, Nung and the Daru exist. Isolated in extreme northern Myanmar, small Tibetan villages can be found. This part of Myanmar has been internationally recognized as a hotspot of biodiversity. Among other species roaming through the forests of northern Myanmar are: tiger, takin, elephant and countless bird species. Many of Asia’s rarest flowers thrive in the alpine meadows we will pass through. If you are looking for a chance to walk among old growth forests, discover rare alpine and temperate flora, gaze on glaciated peaks that have never been climbed, interact with tribes that are beyond the reach of globalization, these walks are for you..

It is difficult to convey how miraculous it is that this region remains as intact as it does, given the loss of so much forest cover in other parts of the country. This region, along with the mountains of neighboring Arunachal Pradesh to the west, are the last areas of high Asia which allow one a taste of true exploration. Below we have listed shorter versions of our treks. For those interested in longer walks to Hkakaborazi wilderness areas, please contact us.
